Short History of Property
The Paula Windeagle and Lee Anne Riverbear are caretakers of an 75 acre farm inside the Tioga State Forest. Windeagle's grandfather "Paul" was hunting deer back in 1938 and got lost in a bad winter snow storm. He saw this farmhouse and asked its owners (The Lows) if he could spend the night until day to keep from freezing to death. They welcomed him in and began to talk. Low mentioned that the school in Leetonia may close and he would have to move to educate his 14 children. Paul said if he ever wanted to sell the place to write or call him. The next Spring Paul was contacted by Mr Low and bought the place for $800.00. . There were also 2 barns and a outhouse on the property when they lived there.
The farm is about 2 miles from the town of Leetonia, which was once a booming lumber town at the turn of the century. Now the town has 14 residents only 2 of which reside the whole year. When Paula was little in the 50's and 60's the outhouse was still in use and we carried water from the creek, which was always cold and clear. In the late 50's Paula's grandfather put in a well and the house was fitted with indoor plumbing. She spent her youthful summers at the farmhouse and have fond memories growing up there. Now Lee and Paula are changing the farmhouse into a retreat center called Camp Eaglebear. It is their hope that many children and adults will be able to learn new things and enjoy this gift as they have. The camp is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2003.
